The Paul Keller AT SUNDOWN Quintet swings and sings fun and familiar jazz songs, re-imagined by Keller through his clever arrangements and string bass pyrotechnics. Vocalist/clarinetist Sarah D’Angelo brings her beauty, charm and grace to the musical proceedings; Detroit’s Dean of Tenor Saxophone Steve Wood is featured prominently out front. Keller’s rhythm section for the festival includes Ann Arbor piano virtuoso Rick Roe and Lansing jazz hero drummer Jeff Shoup. The Paul Keller AT SUNDOWN Quintet proudly announces the release of their new CD My Blue Heaven, available at the Lansing Jazz Festival and online at www.pkorecords.
String bassist, composer, band leader and educator Paul Keller has earned the nick-name “House Bassist For The State Of Michigan” because of the many miles he logs every year traveling to jazz performances across the state. Mr. Keller also travels the world performing with a myriad of jazz luminaries including Diana Krall, Russell Malone, Tamir Hendelman, Benny Green, Bucky Pizzarelli, Stanley Jordan, and Scott Hamilton. Since 1989, the 15-piece Paul Keller Orchestra has played every Monday night in Ann Arbor. The PKO’s home base is Zal Gaz Grotto, 2070 W. Stadium Boulevard. Over the years, the PKO’s Jazz Student Outreach Program has made a positive impact on the lives of thousands of middle school, high school and college musicians. Keller conducts clinics with high school jazz bands throughout Michigan. His exuberance and joy for music making translates quickly to students who enjoy experiencing being in Paul’s orbit. Last year, 13 of Paul’s original orchestra arrangements where performed at Carnegie Hall by Dave Bennett and the New York Pops. Paul recently returned from a 30-day tour of Australia with jazz- superstar Diana Krall, a week with Taipei Jazz Orchestra at the Taiwan Jazz Festival and sold out shows at San Francisco’s SF with saxophonist Harry Allen.
Vocalist and clarinetist Sarah D’Angelo has gained recognition and praise – from appreciative listeners, as well as her peers – as a smart, charming and entertaining jazz vocalist who connects instantly with her audiences. Sarah’s specialty is delivering heartfelt and personal interpretations of familiar songs from the Great American Songbook. She takes special pleasure in surprising listeners with lesser-know gems that always enlighten and delight. Sarah’s fresh and friendly style, expert delivery and cheerful smile brighten every Paul Keller Quintet performance. In 2003, D’Angelo earned her Master’s Degree in Clarinet Performance from the University of Michigan. Sarah’s bandmates adore her and her singing; so do her audiences. Her beautiful clarinet playing is an extra added bonus.
Saxophonist Steve Wood is amazing! With every note he plays, Steve pays tribute to his tenor saxophone heroes: Stan Getz, Ben Webster, Lester Young and Dexter Gordon. Steve got his musical start at Oakland University with Marvin “Doc” Holliday, and also at the Jazz Development Workshop with Detroit’s Jazz Master Marcus Belgrave. Steve Wood has been the recipient of several NEA Fellowships and Michigan Council For The Arts Creative Artist Grants. Steve has two CDs as a leader: Unanswerable Questions and Deep Woods. Steve is a long-time member of the Paul Keller Orchestra.
