MICA Stage
The Jazz Alliance of Mid-Michigan is proud to sponsor the JAMM Scholarship Quartet featuring Mason High School Student and 2012 Sandy Izenson Scholarship Recipient Noah Frankforter on trumpet. Noah’s rhythm section is a triple threat with local jazz masters and JAMM Members Ron Newman on piano, Ed Fedewa on bass, and Ian Levine on drums.
Noah’s Story:
“I started playing jazz in 7th grade, but 8th grade was when I got serious about it after going to the MSU jazz camp. I studied under Etienne Charles for a couple years, also learned from David McWilliams and Anthony Stanco. The summer of 8th grade I went out and started playing at jam sessions in Lansing, where I got a lot of good experience which helped me become the player I am today. The past two years I have started dabbling in more modern styles of jazz, fusing it with funk and hip-hop styles.”
JAMM started awarding the Sandy Izenson Scholarship in 2010 to honor the man who headed up the Mid-Michigan Jazz Society for many years. Sandy was a dedicated musician and educator who loved “passing along the tradition of live jazz”. Noah Frankforter was awarded the 2012 Sandy Izenson Scholarship and is the third high school student to receive this annual $500 scholarship from the Jazz Alliance of Mid-Michigan. The 2013 recipient is Okemos High School Student, James Heinlein.
