What is the role of the guitar in a solo, duo, and trio setting? Jazz guitar player Cory Allen and his assisting musicians will help you explore this idea at the Cory Allen Guitar Clinic. Any jazz instrumentalist and any guitarist would benefit from these new ways to approach improvisation using different group sizes and learn different ways to use the guitar as an improvisational tool.

Jazz guitar is “a way to get in touch with the deepest intangible part of myself, it comforts me, I love sharing it with audiences – the nature of jazz ignites a bond that connects us – jazz is like a language,” says Allen. His ‘voice’ communicates and resonates with the audience.

Cory Allen is a graduate student in jazz studies currently studying under Perry Hughes, the great Detroit bass guitarist, and Rob Smith, Central Michigan University’s director of jazz studies. He has stellar improvisational skills and has done some arranging (Wayne Shorter, “Black Nile”). In addition to performing locally, he’s performed at the Detroit Jazz Festival with the Central Michigan University jazz ensemble and at the 2009 Elmhurst Jazz Festival, receiving one of six Overall Outstanding Musician Awards.
